Could you explain the +2, 0, -1, -12 values? How are those paid for. Those seem to be a new mechanic since I stopped playing.

They basically act similar to another player. They have"loyalty" counters equal to the number in bottom right and once per turn, on your turn only, you can do one of their abilities. They can be attacked by creatures and have life equal to their loyalty counters.
