Re: D&D 3.5 - High Seas

Megan and I have been kicking around the idea of starting a second game in the week for D&D.  I would be DMing this which I think will be fun because I've been wanting to run a swashbuckling campaign for a while, and I would still get to play in Brandon's game each week which is awesome.

We've met a new guy named Zack who is actually a really nice guy and is fairly new to RPG's, though he does have some experience.  At the moment it sounds like the game will be taking place Friday nights, and may possibly switch to Wednesday nights when I am working the day shift at Selway.

All of you are welcome as frequently or infrequently as you'd like to come.  Megan will keep the calendar updated as to when we'll be playing 'officially' and if you're free that night and in the mood to play, then go ahead and show up.

MUAHAHAHAHA!  I am pretty sure that for the beginning of this game, I am going to take a page from an old DM of ours (Steve) and keep you guys as poor as possible for at least a few levels.

Lol, I put 5˘ because I was too lazy to lookup starting gold for first level.  It's pathetic...ouch, I just looked it up.  Nothing.  You don't get starting gold until second.  Can we at least buy one mundane weapon, Burt?

Everyone is armed with a variation on "the stick"... "the stick" is free. Unless we're in a desert or the arctic. Then "the stick" is very expensive.

Well, you guys can pick whatever you want for mundane equipment, just remember that you are probably going to end up having to swim with it.

PHB Pg. 111. table 7-1. random starting gold per class?

im thinking if i can make it i might have to do a druid(with the monk abilities instead of animal form from unearthed arcana) / swordsage

and break him so that he wears full plate and carries around rocks but still floats somehow just to piss off Burt. big_smile

Well...you can buy buoyancy, water breathing, etc for armor right out of the Magic Item Compendium.  So he shouldn't be all that shocked. tongue

And good find on the PHB starting gold.  I was looking at the DMG table which doesn't start until level 2.  Because less than 2,000 gp isn't worth mentioning...lol.  Until now...

I'm not totally sure what I'm going to be but I've decided she will have an eye patch.  And probably not just for looks.

Re: D&D 3.5 - High Seas

If I play I think I might go for a bard. Start out small and learn as I go. Either that or I might go for a Truenamer from the Tome of Magic. Either one would be cool for starting out so that I could ease my way into them. I'm leaning toward Truenamer, because it's cool. But I don't know if it would be as cool at the early levels.

This is all depending on whether Kelly will let me play more. Also, will we be intruding if we play? You mentioned that it was originally just going to be Megan and the new guy.

No, you won't be intruding at all Adam, we just weren't sure if people were going to  have the time for a second game when we cooked up this idea.

Also, are you guys interested in being more on the side of justice, or the lawless side of things?

Noooooooo Adam, I'm sorry if I made you feel like you'd be intruding.  I just don't want people to feel like this is a ,"Jeez, you guys never play anything," situation.  It's a totally open session for people.  I won't make fun of people for not showing up to this one. tongue

As for lawless or justice, I was thinking about that yesterday.  I'm not sure.  I don't really want to be evil, though.  No capturing women to use as whores for our ship or anything.  I wouldn't mind either being pirates or 'privateers' for the empire or something.  I'm definitely thinking closer to pirates than officers.

Does anyone have a hard copy of Tome of Magic that I could borrow? Truename magic is obnoxiously confusing and pdfs are not cutting it. I don't know that I am going to play a Truenamer. Yeesh.

It's the stuff like the Law of whatchamacallit in that the more you use Truename magic on a single being the harder it gets...etc. I dunno. I need to just sit and read it all I think. They seem ridiculously underpowered at the early levels too.

Re: D&D 3.5 - High Seas

Okay, I was reading through Stormwrack...and I came across the section on seafaring roles. In it they describe a "Windsinger." It turned my gaze back to the bard. But, just a bard would be blasé. So, I think it would be cool to have a female bard that could be considered a "siren" of sorts. Just something I'm toying with. But bard is probably going to be the easiest to set up right now and still have the flashy side that I like. Not to mention that I haven't played a female character yet. big_smile

Yeah, I was looking through it last night.  A lot of their prestige classes are actually quite awesome (I've only recently been interested in prestige classes) but in the end, I think I'll probably end up as a sorceress who just chooses water/wind/weather spells.  But I'll call myself a seawitch.

LOL! Thank you? I think.

So, I've been reading and...curse my fickle soul...I like the idea of an Artificer. It could be handy at a lower level. He/she could be quartermaster on the ship. I just need to find a cool RP hook for it.

How many ability points do we get?

ROFL

Adam, Artificers get 1d4 x 10 starting gold.  If there's no random starting gold table (which I didn't find in the Eberron book), you can look at the end of the 'Starting Package' section at the end of every class and it'll give #d# and you just multiply that by 10.

I want to play. I tried calling people before I checked the forums. So, looks like it's rescheduled for Sunday. What time is this going down on Sunday, because I have to work at 8 on Monday morning...

And I'm playing an Artificer.

Re: D&D 3.5 - High Seas

I have a D&D question and since it relates to a character that I will be playing in this campaign, I thought I should post it here. If a druid is a race that is small, does that affect the size of animals he can shift into with his class ability?

There's one that allows you to cast in animal form. Dunno the prereqs.

Re: D&D 3.5 - High Seas

if you plan on multiclassing at all:

Natural Bond: +3 to your effective druid level for animal companion abilities, not above total character level
Practiced Spellcaster: +4 to effective level for casting spells, not above total character level

or:

Natural Spell: cast spells in wild shape (PHB)

there are several "Wild Feats" in complete divine that give you abilities at the cost of wild shape uses.

Spontaneus Healer: swap out your spells for heal spells on your list (complete divine)

there are feats in the complete arcane that give you more spells per day.

there is a feat in the monster manual i think that would increase your natural armor, which for a druid would help out in animal form (though there is also an armor enhancement that allows the armor to shapeshift with you so you keep the armor you are wearing in animal form also.)

just some thoughts...   wow, i just realized i really play druids a lot.

Re: D&D 3.5 - High Seas

I will definitely get Natural Spell. But I can't shift until level 4 I think it is. So, it will be a little while. I really like the idea of feats that make my animal companion better. But, Spontaneous Healer might be good. Thanks for the suggestions everyone!

By the way Atiu (the eldest in Polynesian) is going to be my druid. He's a Shoal Halfling with a Squid animal companion. I just don't know if we will be in water enough to make that a good choice.

So, this weekend we aren't having Brandon's game. Are we doing High Seas on Saturday? That's my vote. I really want to go to another Maulers game. They are playing game 3 of the playoffs on Friday.

It's my understanding that we're playing here tonight and Adam will be catching a ride with Zatcho.  If that's not right, please call us!
