The History of Ruin

(This is a back story of Ruin that has been forming in my mind for some reason and I have been visualizing it in Stained-glass Window panes...don't ask...yay Fable.  Perhaps the actual panes shall be constructed in some format and a voice over of this back story may be applied.)

Our story takes place in a small, out of the way part of a broken kingdom, fraught with chaos, murder, and usurpers.  A noble family lived in this part of the world, a just family who ruled fairly and with compassion.  They tried their best to build what they could from the dust that had been left behind after the scorching of the earth, but there was little they could do without spending their entire treasury in hopes of bringing capable help.  And so, everyone in the area pitched in and helped as best they could, and built a small town as a refuge.

During their time as the nobles of the region, the family bore a new heir, a strong son to carry on the tradition.  The entire region rejoiced with the family and a meager feast was made of what little they could grow to celebrate.  As the boy grew, it was obvious he was destined for greatness, and everyone took comfort in that fact.

While the boy was still a babe, a strange, aged man appeared in town who began to wisely aid the small settlement.  It was not long before he had become the noble family's trusted advisor, and he did much to further the development of the meager survival that was able to be scratched out of the surrounding areas.  Everything was well, until dark and mysterious events began to crop up around the tiny settlement.  People were found missing at the end of the work day.  Rats began carrying more diseases.  Bandits began attacking those who were foolish enough to venture too far from town.  However, the worst of all was when the young son suddenly disappeared from the noble family's home.

Search parties were dispatched all over the region in hopes of finding the lost heir.  Many did not return, and those that did suffered terribly at the hands of the bandits.  Eventually, the search was abandoned, and a darkness seemed to settle over the people of the town.  The noble family never gave up hope that someone might find their son.  Then the father became ill, and even though the advisor and healers of the region tried their best, the disease twisted him and he died a horrible, gruesome death.  The rats were blamed and a city-wide extermination started.  Many of the townsfolk suddenly fell ill to the same disease despite the eradication of the rodent population.  Eventually, the advisor found a cure and many lives were saved.  In an attempt to preserve order and a semblance of leadership, the noble woman married the advisor, despite the fact that he was many times her senior.  The people seemed to appreciate the sacrifice and peace and prosperity seemed to be on the horizon. Then tragedy struck, the noble woman fell ill to an even worse disease than her former husband, and died just as twisted and miserable as her husband had.  The advisor seemed to take the death pretty poorly and locked himself in his chambers for weeks on end.

Eventually, the advisor stopped locking himself away and began to run the small town like a kingdom, claiming to be the king and demanding to be respected as such.  A castle was eventually built for him at one end of town, where he and his servants would stay.  Ignoring the grumbling and verbal concern of the servants, the new king began setting up a foul laboratory in the bowls of the castle, and many odd and dark rites were carried out in those chambers.  He, of course, squashed any rumors that escaped the castle and replaced any servant that spread such "lies" about the king.  To this day, the townsfolk still do not know what happened to the previous maids and odd servants that had fallen victim to the mass revamping of the staff.

One year, a strong warrior entered town and requested an audience with the king.  When it was granted, the meeting was kept quiet and behind closed doors.  Something odd was going on, and the townsfolk were none too happy about more clandestine events in their midst, but were wise enough not to vocalize them too much.  Everything went back to as normal as it could when the strange warrior left town.  However, the odd events were not over, for two months later when another warrior entered town, the folks began getting the eerie feeling of de ja vu.  This young, strong warrior seemed all too familiar to them, but they could not place where they might have met him before.  The young warrior made his way up to the castle and was greeted as a son by the king.  This created even more confusion among the townsfolk.  However, they were somewhat appeased when told that it was their long lost prince, come to protect them all.  It explained the de ja vu, but there was something odd about the young man that stood before them that day.  They would not realize what that oddity was until later, when he was sent on missions by the king and the warrior displayed unparalleled brutality.  Once again, the town filled with fear, but now there was no turning back, no escape from this hell that had been so carefully crafted for them.  It was later discovered that the name that had been given to the young warrior, was Ruin.  And the name fit all too well, for he was the very embodiment of his namesake.

The question still arises from time to time, whether he truly is the long lost noble family's son...

Re: The History of Ruin

*claps*  Me likey.

That sounds very much like what would have happened to Vaastock (sp?...) after it was sacked, eh Burticus?  Perhaps the town is called New Vaastock, which would kind of be a mockery considering what's going on now.

I have a character named Yukikaori Renxiu (goes by Ren) who is a soulknife.  She was part of an adventuring party who stopped in Vaastock for the winter in the year that it just happened to get sacked.  She, and the rest of the party, had worked for the city guard to pay their way for the winter and she and the Captain of the Guard ended up having a fling that turned into love that ended in marriage. She was 8 months pregnant when Vaastock got sacked and her husband sent her and a maid out to a country cottage about two or three days away.  She was lucky that the cottage had sustainable gardens and a few goats/chickens/cows and whatnot.  She raised her son and when he was 13 she sold of what little she owned in order to buy him an apprenticeship with a wizard so that he could get a good education and be safer than at the cottage.  She also wanted to move back to a city and perhaps adventure again.  It was very interesting.

It would also be very interesting for her to know of Ruin (since she'd only be a two days on foot from New Vaastock, if that is in fact where Ruin happens to be in this story) just because it would be so random and coincidental.  tongue  She's good, though.

Re: The History of Ruin

The story is kind of up to the point that I started playing him.  We all know what happened after that, up to the point that he went Wizard Hunting.  Burt says he caught and killed the rogue wizard and I plan to give Ruin the Mage Slayer Feat now since he will hit 12 and 13 in order to catch up.  I might look him over and see if I can take Burt up on the offer that I can rebuild him how I wish...
